 Years ago when my mother was dying, a JW came to my door. I explained I couldn’t talk very long because I needed to get back to her, but I asked him to pray for us. He immediately bowed his head so I took his hand in mine and listened as he prayed for us. He was sincere, generous, and beautiful and his kindness was a tremendous comfort. Several months later he came back. The JWs around here seem pretty organized and they are really nice. One lady came by about the same time each year and since she was trying to do what she thought was a good thing for me I always tried to be polite. She really had the sales pitch honed to perfection! She always has a way of using my objections or refusals as a way to keep the conversation going. Finally I just was blunt. This isn’t going to work, you need to stop wasting your time on me, I appreciate your good intentions, but don’t come any more. She hasn’t been back since. But oh my. She could sell ice to Eskimos.

For women: I went to a JW service and was shocked to see that they dressed just like regular people. What I didn’t see was women in pants (not that they never wear them, just not for JW meetings or when they go door to door), displays of cleavage, too tight clothing, overdone makeup or hair, looud jewelery or seriously loud patterns or colors. I was shocked. They looked “normal”. I expected to see dowdy dresses below the 2023 Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl Champions Wyoming Cowboy Tucson Az December 30, 2023 T-shirt and I will buy this knees, drab hair, no makeup or jewelry and boring hair. They are asked to dress with modesty and I took that to mean boring and dowdy. And yes, they do/can wear pants when the occasion calls for it, but not many do. It’s not forbidden but unless they are required for work/sports, most just wear longer skirts. For men: clean and presentable at all times. Suits for meetings and door to door. No sagging pants that show underwear or pants so tight as to show certain parts of their anatomy. Once again no loud colors or prints.
