 When the Colonialists left, they tended to hand over power to what for its familiarity may be called, the Bourgeois. The military regimes were able to use the influx of cash and their control of the “Commanding Heights” to create a patronage system, a process exacerbated by post-Thatcher privatisation craze where “friends and families” were sold state holdings on the cheap. Further, the fact that most African countries were commodity exporters created an easy source of patronage without the oversight demanded by corporate governance and a heavily taxed populace. The revolutionary parties that came into power also followed that tack, creating venal institutions for the purposes of resource extraction.
