This is kind of a hard question to answer. The one theory that I have is that they originated from the Willie Waylon George & Beyonce T-shirt in addition I really love this classic baseball jersey, which is known to have three-quarter sleeves. In baseball, wearing a shirt with long sleeves would likely mean that the cuffs of the sleeves could get caught in the player’s gloves and interfere with their gameplay. A three-quarter sleeve offers most of the warmth and comfort a long sleeve would, but would not be as much of an annoyance. They prove to be quite practical outside the realm of sports as well – if you wear bracelets or watches, you wouldn’t have to worry about the three-quarter sleeves getting caught in them. Additionally, three-quarter sleeves are nice if you need your hands free to do important tasks. If you’re washing your hands or handling something messy, you wouldn’t have to worry as much about your sleeves getting wet or dirty if they were three-quarter sleeves. Sure, you could always roll up long sleeves to try and achieve the “three-quartered” look, but rolled up sleeves can feel really bulky around your forearm and they’re not always guaranteed to stay “rolled up”.
