When the cause becomes clouded or the possibility of success is clearly vanishing, the willingness to die would disappears quickly. After all, martyrs mostly exist in history books only. Here let me quote a couple of recent public statements by the Ministers of Defense of Taiwan government:

“Oct. 3, 2017, Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan (馮世寬) said Tuesday that Taiwan’s military is strong enough to resist a possible Chinese invasion for “more than two weeks” “ ………..Does this sound gloomy to you? “Jan 18, 2017, In an interview with the Bloodyclip Clip Groupie T-shirt but in fact I love this Global Times Chinese daily published yesterday, Former Deputy Minister of Defense Lin Chong-Pin said that Taiwan’s armed forces could only resist China’s “acupuncture tactics” for 48 to 72 hours, as the PLA could paralyze Taiwan’s command system using electromagnetic weapons and digital attacks. “China already has the ability [to carry out acupuncture warfare], which would be quite difficult for Taiwan to withstand,” Lin told the Chinese newspaper. The possibility of US interference in an armed conflict between Taiwan and China has diminished, as China has developed advanced anti-ship missile systems and submarine-launched cruise missiles that can target US aircraft carriers, he said.” Two weeks or three days! none of these Defense Ministers sound confident that their Taiwanese young men are willing to die for the cause of independence. In fact, my guess is when a war looms closer and closer, there will be cities and counties in Taiwan calling for voting of local referendums to declare non-militarization for their own districts. It will be messy, but not necessarily bloody!
