Next we have the casting. While Sean Connery did a pretty good job in the role of Allan Quatermain, the rest of the ensemble, were OK, but not great. Most were better known as television actors at the time. Unless you are a serious cinephile, you likely won’t recognize most of them, including Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng, and Richard Roxburgh. Finally, we have the writing. This movie did not really know how to balance its ensemble competently, leading to the feeling that the cast was just there for the ride, rather than being fully fledged characters. That can probably be best attributed to the poor writing.

In my humble opinion, the star just ignored the terrible script, awful premise, weak supporting cast and carried the entire film on his marvelous…. hair. The movie is terrible. Jim Carrey is great. He breaks you up every time he’s on screen, but it’s clear he thinks he’s in a different movie in a parallel universe. At this moment, I would like to put in a good word for “The Cable Guy” which I heard was a terrible movie but I found still had some merit in it, largely due to Carrey’s performance. The movie has a great plot twist and Carrey does a perfect job of foreshadowing and showing a deep understanding of the character he’s playing. Dumbledore is a difficult character to portray in the Harry Potter universe because there is just so damn much prelude to this character. When someone’s playing the role of a young Albus Dumbledore, he’s not only bringing to life JKR’s take on her beloved character. He is also, brining to life, his take on Michael Gambon’s rendition of JKR’s beloved character.
