If you already don’t like the job, your right to quit could prove to be a benefit if you find yourself in complete misery there. In my experience, it’s likely not going to get any better. In the US, any company, public or private, can fire employees who aren’t under contract or part of a collective bargaining agreement, without notice. The ownership of the company has nothing to do with it. In a lot of cases, companies don’t do this though, except in extreme cases such as an employee making violent threats, stealing, abusing a customer or another employee, etc. This is for a few reasons. First of all, hiring and training new employees is expensive. Companies don’t make a habit of randomly firing people at the drop of a hat. If an employee is having trouble, larger companies will generally provide a formal ‘performance improvement plan’ or something to that effect, spelling out what the employee needs to demonstrate within a certain timeframe to stay employed. Some employers will work with the employee to maximize the chances of the employee succeeding. Others will let them sink or swim. If the employee’s performance improves, they’ll keep their job. Otherwise, they might be fired at the end of the specified period.
Another reason employers don’t randomly fire people stems from regulations. That’s a good way to get caught up in discrimination or wrongful termination lawsuits. In the US, and regulations vary state to state as well, there are certain reasons employers aren’t supposed to fire people. Those include discriminatory reasons like firing someone because of their age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, etc. It also includes not firing someone because they refused to break the law, because they were a ‘whistleblower’, because they used federally mandated family leave, etc. So to avoid any possibility of a firing falling into one of those categories, many companies have a process to document employee performance, issues, etc. So when they do finally decide to fire the worker, they have documentation showing a history of issues (e.g. showing up late to work, missing deadlines, etc.) and poor performance reviews that they can use to justify the firing if it ends up in court. However, the employee often might not know that their boss is building a case against them, so it might look like a ‘without notice’ situation to them.
